QUALIFICATIONS FOR DEACONS from Connection Assembly's Constitution & Bylaws

A deacon must be at least 23 years old. A man’s life and character must pass certain criteria before he can qualify to serve. The Scriptures dictate the qualifications.
1) The deacon must be chosen from ā€œamong youā€ (Acts 6:3), a lay member of the local congregation for at least one year (previous 12 months). "Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty."
2) The deacon must be a man of good reputation, (Act 6:3). The confidence and trust of the congregation and community are essential.
3) The deacon is in a spiritual ministry, ā€œfull of the Holy Spiritā€ (Acts 6:3), according to Acts 2:4 and continuing to be ā€œfullā€ (Ephesians 5:18): And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit...
4) The deacon is required to make decisions in practical and temporal matters as well as giving support to the pastor in spiritual matters. Sound direction and wise counsel needs ā€œwisdomā€ (Acts 6:3).
5) The deacon must be willing to be involved in the work of God through the church; he is to ā€œserveā€ (Acts 6:2): And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, ā€œIt is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables."
6) The deacon is to be dignified (1 Timothy 3:8)
7) The deacon is ā€œnot double-tonguedā€ (1 Timothy 3:8), i.e. a man of his word and dependable.
8) The deacon is ā€œnot given to much wineā€ (1 Timothy 3:8). i.e. He totally abstains from alcoholic beverages and does not depend on physical stimulants.
9) Deacons must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain (1 Timothy3:8)
10) The deacon is proper in doctrine, ā€œholding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscienceā€ (1 Timothy 3:9), fully subscribing to the tenets of faith of the Assemblies of God.
11) The deacon is a mature believer, (1 Timothy 3:10). "And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless."
12) The deacon has not experienced matrimonial mix-ups, but is the husband ā€œof one wifeā€ (1 Timothy 3:12).
We recommend that this standard be upheld by all our assemblies, except when the divorce occurred prior to conversion or for the scriptural causes of a former spouse’s marital unfaithfulness (Matthew 19:9), or the abandonment of the believer by the unbeliever (1 Corinthians 7:10-15).
See Article X. Ministry, Section 6. Divorce and Remarriage, Paragraph C, subparagraph 2.
13) The deacon leads his home in Christ, ā€œruling their children and their own houses wellā€ (1 Timothy 3:12).
14) The deacon’s wife must be an example of the Christian life, "Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things." (1 Timothy 3:11).
